Manhattan’s Upper West Side: Tony Residential Neighborhood with 19th-Century Townhouses and Waterfront Parks

Set between Central Park and the Hudson River, the Upper West Side is one of the toniest neighborhoods in New York City. Classic brownstones and prewar buildings line streets that are recognizable from innumerable movies and television shows, including Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters. The neighborhood is a favorite address of the rich and famous—the Ansonia building, to take just one example, has been called home by everybody from Babe Ruth to Angelina Jolie.

Carousels, bike paths, and manmade lakes fill the iconic, 843-acre Central Park, which you can access via the entrance at 72nd Street. For a quieter alternative, head west to Riverside Park, where you’ll find beautiful flower gardens and waterfront picnic spots.

Nearby cultural landmarks include the American Museum of Natural History, where you can stroll past lifelike dioramas, a full-size model of a blue whale, and a Tyrannosaurus rex made up of fossils up to 65 million years old. Another classic New York institution is just southwest of here: Lincoln Center, home to the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

"Ghosts of Greenwich Village" NYC Haunted Walking Tour - Good Any Saturday at 8:00pm Until December 30, 2018 (Reserve in Advance)

New York City is rich with history, no doubt about that. Just look at how old the buildings are! That being said, it's clearly one of the most haunted cities in America, and the rambunctious Greenwich Village is one of the epicenters of its paranormal activity. While it stands today as a trendy hub of restaurants, apartments and hang spots for NYU students, it was previously a dwelling for mischievous parlor houses, speakeasies and gambling halls. On this two-mile tour, a guide will share the spooky stories behind these spots like the "House of Death" NYU hall that Edgar Allan Poe haunts and an old Greenwich Village firehouse, where people claim to see a hanging corpse from the 1930s.

Times Square, Manhattan: Flashy Neon Lights and World-Class Culture

Times Square is at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The famous address—affectionately known as “the Crossroads of the World”—is home to hypnotizing billboards, giant wraparound news tickers, and the neon lights of Broadway. Beyond the glitz and gimmicks, there are a number of cultural offerings in the area, ranging from museums to Michelin-rated restaurants. Buildings of historical and architectural interest include the Paramount Building and One Times Square, site of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Nearby, the Museum of Modern Art houses a trove of masterpieces including Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night, Claude Monet’s Water Lilies paintings, and Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans. Save time for a stroll through the museum’s outdoor sculpture garden, where installations are clustered around sparkling reflecting pools. About a mile north of Times Square, the David H. Koch Theater is home to one of the world’s foremost dance companies—the New York City Ballet, which stages contemporary works as well as classics like Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Hard Wax: Sparing Your Skin

Hard wax eschews the need for fabric strips and caters to sensitive skin. Read on to find out more about this popular wax option.

If it’s hard to envision a block of hard wax effectively uprooting body hair, don’t be alarmed: the name is a bit of a misnomer. In fact, in a sense you could even say that hard wax is actually softer. Like soft wax, hard wax is indeed melted before being slathered onto skin, but it’s applied at a cooler temperature—about 98 to 113ºF—and remains somewhat malleable when cool. Made primarily from beeswax, pine resin, or a petroleum derivative, it’s layered onto the skin without the use of fabric strips. The wax then hardens around hairs before an aesthetician removes it by hand, pulling up only hair and not skin. (Many salons first coat the skin with a light layer of oil to make the wax even less likely to stick.) Hard wax tends to be more expensive, and requires a little more practice, but aestheticians who have mastered the technique recommend it especially for sensitive areas such as the bikini area, the armpits, or the feelings.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts: Quaint Villages, Protected Beaches, and Miles of Shoreline

In the late 19th century, Cape Cod began to blossom into a summer vacation destination as visitors swapped crowded coastal cities for the sandy shores of eastern Massachusetts. Today, the arm-shaped peninsula encompasses a string of idyllic fishing villages, rolling dunes, and 300 miles of sandy shoreline—and it’s still the place where many East Coasters choose to spend their leisurely summer days. Popular attractions include fresh-seafood restaurants, quaint stores, and bicycle trails, such as the 11-mile Shining Sea Bikeway that wends from North Falmouth to Woods Hole.

But there’s also plenty to do in winter, when the crowds are a lot smaller. On the uppermost tip of the Cape, the free-spirited art colony of Provincetown attracts visitors year-round. This is one of the best places to head for a vibrant nightlife scene—there are cabarets, bars, and lounges aplenty. Pop into the Provincetown Art Association and Museum to check out local artwork, both historical and contemporary. Farther south, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium houses 140 marine animals native to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region. You might even see marine biologists feeding the seals in the aquarium’s outdoor enclosure.

Midtown East Manhattan: Iconic Sights and Shops Along Fifth Avenue

Midtown East refers to a 17-block stretch of central Manhattan between Fifth Avenue and the East River. The area is known for some of New York’s most famous landmarks, including Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and Grand Central Terminal (the world’s sixth-most-visited tourist attraction). Though in recent years Grand Central has filled with upscale restaurants and shops, it still serves as a major transportation hub with subway lines, Metro trains, and zip lines heading all over the city.

A stroll down Fifth Avenue is a world-renowned shopping experience: the street is filled with luxury boutiques and flagship department stores, including the original Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. For a little tranquility in the middle of the city, follow Fifth up to the southeast corner of Central Park. Just a few feet off the street is the Pond, which is spanned by a stone bridge. A little farther north, you’ll find the heart of Central Park Zoo.

Bike Styles: What Type of Bike Are You Looking For?

Whether you want one that’s stable and comfortable or one meant to turn you into a blur as you fly down trails, bike shops have something that will fit the bill. See which ride is best for you.

A well-stocked bike shop can seem like a wonderland if you roll up as an avid cyclist or a new rider. Although most retailers gladly will let you test-drive as many styles as you like, being able to make a few basic distinctions will help the sales staff point you toward the bike that best matches your lifestyle and penchant for handlebar streamers.

Cruiser: These bikes took off in the 1940s–1950s, and even new ones retain a vintage look: balloon tires, cushy seats, swooping frames, and handlebars that curve invitingly toward the rider. Sturdy, stable, and offering an upright riding position, they can appeal to older riders and anyone preferring a more laid-back pace. They’re best suited to terrain that’s flat—and even sandy—because of the wide tires and full-chain guard.

Mountain Bike: Although they’re ubiquitous in big-box stores, mountain bikes really are designed for those whose rides take them off the road. Wide, knobby tires and frames built to absorb shocks make these bikes the best choice for riding through sand, mud, or rocky areas. Most have at least 15 gears for uphill and downhill ease, but their weight means you won’t build up much speed.

Touring Bike: These bikes are ideal for longer road trips or commutes. Drop bars—handlebars whose ends curve down, away from the rider, and toward the wide-open road—offer a choice of riding positions to avoid achiness, and medium-width tires combine stability with swiftness. If they don’t already come tricked out with accessories, they’ll at least be made to attach front-and-rear racks, full fenders, and water-bottle cages.

Hybrid: With features of both mountain and touring bikes, this popular, relatively inexpensive category of bike also includes so-called comfort and fitness bikes. Their relaxed-frame geometry and upright handlebars make them easy to mount and dismount for riders of all ages. Speed isn’t a primary concern with these friendly machines, but most models have enough gears to handle the hills riders encounter along bike trails or on quick trips around town.

Single Speed: Almost any bike can be made with only one gear, but when most people talk about single speeds, they’re referring to a bike with slim tires and a classic diamond-shaped racing-style frame. Although getting up big hills takes some work, people in flatter areas enjoy single speeds for their easy, intuitive maintenance and potential for velocity—the lack of gears and derailleurs makes for a sleek ride that still can be customized with funky handlebars and bright color schemes.

Yonkers, New York: Culture and Relaxation in a City with Revolutionary Roots

It was founded in 1646, so Yonkers has had a long time to grow into New York’s fourth-largest city. Just 2 miles north of Manhattan, situated right next to the Bronx, Yonkers has abundant green spaces and suburban pace of life, providing a stark contrast to the Big Apple. The 161-acre Tibbetts Brook Park acts as Yonkers’s recreational centerpiece. Its massive aquatic center features a kids’ spray playground, lap lanes, and a lazy river. In another section of the park, an 18-hole mini-golf course provides families with an afternoon of fun.

A stroll through the city streets shows that Yonkers knows how to look forward while still honoring its past. Architectural gem Philipse Manor Hall went from the home of Revolutionary Loyalists to city to a museum dedicated to art and history. Just a 5-minute walk away, The Science Barge looks to the future: it’s a completely green, self-sustaining urban garden set atop a barge that floats along the Hudson. If you walk another mile north along the river, you’ll find the Hudson River Museum, which combines the two with its rotating art exhibits that include everything from historic illustrations to multimedia installations and its own planetarium.

The Old York Historical Society promotes the area’s rich history, showcasing colonial exhibits and landmarks. A one-room schoolhouse from 1745, a tavern dating to 1750, and the 1719 Old Gaol prison are among the sites you can visit. Another nearby attraction is Wiggly Bridge, believed by many to be the smallest suspension bridge in the world.

Yosemite National Park, California: Giant Sequoia Trees and Waterfalls

Yosemite National Park is a place of superlatives: it’s home to one of the world’s tallest waterfalls, the largest piece of exposed granite in the world (climb to the top on a Half Dome hike), and a grove of ancient sequoia trees that are among the largest living beings on the planet. So it’s no wonder why this swath of wilderness in central California welcomes nearly four million visitors each year.

Crowds at Yosemite are much smaller in winter, so visitors can typically experience the park’s natural wonders at an unhurried pace. In cold weather, one trek worth making is the 1.2-mile Bridalveil Fall hike, which leads right up to the roaring cascade. It can be icy during winter, but it’s a trip that’s both easy and rewarding.

Nearby, you can duck indoors at the American Museum of Natural History, where you can stroll past lifelike dioramas, a full-size model of a blue whale, and a Tyrannosaurus rex made up of fossils up to 65 million years old. Another classic New York institution is just southwest of here: Lincoln Center, home to the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

Blowouts: Hot Air with a Purpose

Sure, you can blow-dry your hair at home, but it likely won’t be quite the same as a salon blowout. Find out why with Groupon’s look into the blowout’s sleek mystique.

There’s something like old-time alchemy going on every time someone gets a blowout. Take a couple of elemental ingredients—wind and heat—combine them with a professional’s trained hand and strong wrist, and you end up with something precious: movie-star hair. The actual process is simple: the stylist washes the hair, then blow-dries it in small sections to the client’s specifications, often using a round brush to create smooth volume. The result might be straight, wavy, or purposely tousled, and it can be such a look changer that some women refrain from washing their hair for days afterward to maintain the glamour. Many people find the service so valuable they return to the salon for it between haircuts, sometimes several times a week.

In some ways, this practice is a throwback to the beauty parlors of the past, where women would drop in weekly to have their hair styled and set. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis used to get her hair blown out three times a week in the 1960s and 1970s; today, reportedly, so do celebs such as Kate Middleton and Gwyneth Paltrow. To keep up with demand, blowout-only salons have popped up in the last few years, dedicating all their chairs to the service.

If New Yorkers have a reputation for always wearing black, then this Midtown hotel is a local through and through. Its interior is done up almost exclusively in shades of black and white, plus pops of chrome, which give it a sleek, modern vibe. Guest rooms are as functional as they are fashionable, thanks to amenities such as mini bar, and Bose Wave sound systems that let you play your own music.

  • In-room entertainment includes more than 200 HD cable channels, which you can watch on a wall-mounted plasma TV, plus free WiFi access.
  • Japanese and Vietnamese fusion cuisine, such as mixed sushi and shrimp shumai, pairs with upscale cocktails at the on-site Red Moon Restaurant.
  • See a show at one of the many nearby theaters. The Richard Rogers Theatre, home of Hamilton, is just a block away, and the Music Box, Lyceum, Nederlander, and other venues are within a three-block radius.
  • The dazzling lights of Times Square twinkle just a half a block away from the hotel.
  • Van Gogh’s Starry Night hangs at the Museum of Modern Art, which is about a 15-minute walk away.

Manhattan’s Midtown West: Edgy, Urban Vibe with Lots of Restaurants

Though it’s a stone’s throw from top attractions such as Central Park, Broadway, and Radio City Music Hall, Midtown West can feel a little grittier and less developed than some of the surrounding NYC neighborhoods. Stretching roughly from 59th to 29th Street and the Hudson River to 8th Avenue (though some say it continues as far east as Madison Avenue), Midtown West lacks the chain restaurants of Times Square and the large department stores of 5th Avenue. Instead, you can find neighborhood markets, cafes, and walk-up row houses.

Midtown West is also known as Hell’s Kitchen, a nod to the numerous restaurants that serve everything from Asian street food to fine French cuisine. The neighborhood’s eateries and bars are especially concentrated along 9th and 10th Avenues, and it’s easy to walk between them all.

Deep-Tissue Massage: Like Untying Knots Buried in the Sand

Not simply focused on relaxation, deep-tissue massage seeks to relieve muscle pain through intense, deliberate strokes. Check out our guide to know what to expect.

Some entanglements have simple solutions: a wrinkled tablecloth can be smoothed out in minutes with an iron, and an unruly mess of hair needs only a tube of superglue to be set straight forever. But when the fascia—the layer of connective tissue that covers and interpenetrates the body’s muscles and bones—gets tied up in knots, it’s time to call in an expert.

“What deep-tissue massage purports to do a lot of the time is mild fascial release, which is kind of warming up the fascia and releasing lactic acid and any other toxins that have built up there,” says Katie O’Reilly, associate editor for DaySpa magazine. To achieve this, the therapist’s fingers, thumbs, and elbows move along the body in slow, deliberate strokes, applying pressure to penetrate beyond superficial muscle layers and relieve pain and tension. More intense than Swedish massage, deep-tissue sessions can last up to 90 minutes, ensuring the therapist has enough time to devote to particularly troublesome trigger points.

Conventional wisdom states that a proper deep-tissue massage should be at least a little painful. This “no pain, no gain” mentality, however, doesn’t totally apply—a massage, no matter how intense, should still be relaxing, and O’Reilly notes, “If you’re getting beat up during the massage, you should probably tell the therapist to rein it in a little bit.” Maintaining an open line of communication with your therapist is important for other reasons as well. He or she needs to know about your health history before administering the treatment, as the intensity of deep-tissue strokes may exacerbate certain medical conditions.

Regular or Synthetic Oil? How to Keep Your Car Hydrated

If you’re not sure which kind of oil to choose, browse Groupon’s rundown of the three main options.

Motor oil is integral to your engine’s performance—it keeps parts moving friction-free, prevents the engine’s temperature from getting too high, and cleans the engine as it circulates. After so many miles on the road, however, oil breaks down. When this happens, it’s up to you to choose the type of motor oil you want to refresh your engine.

Regular, or conventional, motor oil is made from petroleum pumped from the ground. Oil refineries process this crude oil into various thicknesses, with thinner oils reserved for car engines and gas tanks. Unavoidable natural impurities and creepy fossils occur in regular motor oil, which is why owner’s manuals recommend an oil change every few thousand miles as these impurities build up in the form of “sludge.”

Synthetic oil, as the name implies, is the result of manmade processes designed to produce the most efficient lubricant possible. Most synthetics are born from natural oil and then purified at the molecular level. Since its molecules are all the same size, synthetic oil maintains its viscosity better in extreme temperatures than regular motor oil, helping engines purr even in the darkest days of winter. Synthetic oil also lasts longer than its counterpart and can prolong the life of an engine. However, it also costs two to three times more than regular motor oil per oil change.

Semi-synthetic or synthetic-blend oil combines regular and synthetic oils, producing a lubricant with many of the same benefits as synthetic oil at a lower cost. Drivers can also switch between synthetic and regular motor oils without doing damage to their car’s engine.

Hotel at a Glance: The Lexington New York City

Recently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, The Lexington New York City, a 4-star hotel, has jumped into its future by looking to the past. The hotel’s Jazz Age origins inspired the design—guest rooms are styled with art deco touches, while the on-site lounge feels like a mashup between the aesthetics of the 21st century and 1929, when the hotel first opened its doors. Between its new look and extensive art collection, The Lexington New York City, a part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, embodies boutique sophistication.

  • Where to dine: two on-site outlets—The Mixing Room, a martini-and-cocktail lounge with live jazz and Raffles Bistro, which serves food from breakfast till late night.
  • Fuel up for the day with a coffee, latte, or coffee latte mocha espresso with soy at the on-site Starbucks.
  • Notable guests have included Joe DiMaggio, Marilyn Monroe, Bill Clinton, and Patti LaBelle.
  • Swanky digs: Rooms come with gorgeous marble bathrooms and high-tech amenities, including smart TVs with streaming apps (Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, and Pandora) in every room.
  • What’s nearby? Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, and the United Nations Headquarters are less than a mile away.

From the lobby, where aquariums and postmodern light fixtures add touches of gallery cool to the space, you’ll head up to one of the hotel’s sleek guest rooms; amenities here include Bose sound systems and free WiFi.

  • Eat and drink any of the nearby attractions like Bond 45, The Lambs Club, or Serafina.
  • Nearby attractions include the Theater District, foodie-approved restaurants of Hell’s Kitchen, and iconic NYC landmarks ranging from Rockefeller Center to the Empire State Building.

ELF The Musical

Based on the 2003 Will Ferrell cinematic smash, Elf is a comic Christmas classic for a new generation. Orphaned baby Buddy makes a fateful crawl into Santa’s sack of toys, and finds himself an unwitting resident of the North Pole. Raised among elves, Buddy grows up thinking he is an elf, himself—until his suspiciously sizable build and lack of toy-making prowess force him to acknowledge he is not like the others. With Santa’s permission, Buddy heads to the Big Apple to reconnect with his birth father and share his uniquely winning perspective on the Christmas season.

Recently announced, George Wendt, from the long-running television series Cheers will be starting as Santa Claus. With a score by Broadway stalwarts Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer) and a book by Tony-winners Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) and Thomas Meehan (Annie, Hairspray, The Producers), Elf instills the holiday spirit in audiences while underscoring the importance of being true to yourself, with or without pointy slippers.

The Science of Spray Tanning: Sugar-Based Bronzing

When you step into a spray-tan booth, you set off a chemical reaction in your skin. Groupon explores this feat of chemistry.

A spray tan isn’t paint or makeup; it goes on clear. And it doesn’t affect melanin, the stuff that darkens skin exposed to sun. How does a spray tan work, then? It all comes down to a chemical called dihydroxyacetone—or DHA, as its friends call it.

DHA is a kind of sugar; like food sugars, it can even be derived from sugar cane or beets. When applied, it begins to interact with amino acids in the skin’s outer layer and turn it darker. But it’s not living tissue that it’s after: DHA associates mostly with the dead skin cells that cover your body. As these cells naturally fall off over time—which they do so frequently that after about a month, you have an entirely new epidermis—the color fades gradually until it’s back to its original state, usually after a week or so. That’s why salons recommend exfoliating before getting a spray tan: if you remove the skin cells that will be first to fall off anyway, your tan will last longer.

If spray-tan formulas all start out colorless, how can tanning salons offer different darkness levels? They simply up the concentration of DHA for clients who want to go darker. Those new to spray tanning should be careful, however. A higher concentration of DHA could mean a more orange tint, so starting at a light concentration and working your way up—or spacing out multiple applications at the same concentration—is wise. To counteract any tangerine tendencies, some formulas add a second chemical known as erythrulose. Derived from the sugars found in raspberries, erythrulose produces a reddish tint that complements the orange tones in DHA to create a more natural-looking color.
